Tank vs. Tankless Water Heater Options
There are two primary options for heating water: tank and tankless water heaters. The first option, and most traditional, is a tank water heater. These water heaters heat water and store it in large tanks so that it’s ready whenever needed. Tanks are typically between 15 to 60 gallons, allowing homeowners quick access to hot water.
While tank water heaters aren’t comparatively expensive, the primary downside is that energy must constantly be expended to keep the tank warm at all times. This means that you may see a spike in your energy bills due to the water heater running at a higher energy level.
The second option for heating water is a tankless water heater. These heat water as needed and are installed directly on the water lines that go to your plumbing fixtures. While they require a few more seconds of time to reach the fixture than a hot water tank does, they don’t require the constant expenditure of energy.
Tankless water heaters are incredibly energy-efficient and can potentially reduce your energy consumption by up to 35 percent. They can be installed in small spaces and take up significantly less space than a tank water heater. Depending on the size of your home, you may need to install several tankless water heaters to provide adequate hot water throughout the house. This is important if multiple household members or appliances use hot water simultaneously.
Tankless water heaters tend to require more maintenance due to hard water sediment buildup, but these mineral deposits can usually be mitigated with a whole-home water softener.
Water Heater Installation
Once you have selected the right water heater for your home, our team will size the system to your requirements and begin the installation process. First, we remove the old system and thoroughly inspect all connections, as these must be fully functional to ensure safety and efficiency. During this process, the gas and water supply will need to be turned off.
For tank models, installation takes less than a day. Tankless models will depend on the size of your home, the number of hot water fixtures, and if we need to plumb new natural gas lines. It can take up to two days for tankless water heater installation to be complete.
Water Heater Maintenance
Water heaters provide hot water for showers, baths, laundry, and more. They are generally very reliable but occasionally need maintenance to maximize their efficiency and extend their service life.
If you’re unsure about when you last had your water heater serviced, call Anthony Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Electric. We offer expert water heater maintenance in Kansas City and the surrounding areas. We service all types, brands, and sizes of water heaters and offer replacement, repair, and installation.
Tank water heaters that haven’t been serviced in over a year likely have sediment buildup inside of them. This sediment can create a layer of insulation, reducing efficiency and performance. During a maintenance call, our plumbers can flush out any sediment, ensuring your water heater works properly.
We also service tankless water heaters, which can suffer effects from hard water sediment buildup as well.
